WHAT ARE TONGUE AND LIP TIES? A tongue tie occurs when the thin membrane under a child’s tongue (the lingual frenum) restricts the movement of the tongue. • Up to 20% of newborns have tongue ties. • A lip tie occurs when membrane attaching their upper lip to their upper gums (the labial frenum) restricts lip mobility. • All babies are born with frenums, however not all of them have tongue and lip ties requiring treatment.
